IETA is a global non-profit business organisation dedicated to supporting the development of carbon pricing mechanisms worldwide. We are the leading international voice of the business community on carbon markets, with over 300 members from many different sectors (www.ieta.org/our-members)

Housed within IETA, the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA) represents the interests of service providers in promoting emissions reductions and offsetting to the highest standards of environmental integrity and in support of the Paris Agreement. ICROA provides a Code of Best Practice and Accreditation Programme and supports organisations through advocacy and action-oriented activities aimed at advancing best practice in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM).

We’re hiring a director to support IETA’s and ICROA’s expanding offering in voluntary carbon markets. This is a global role with ideal location being US east coast or London with flexibility to work virtually. All candidates must be eligible to work in one of the proposed location.

The Director will play a key role in advancing the global VCM and in supporting the ICROA Accreditation Programme.   

We are looking for someone with at least 7 years of relevant experience in carbon markets who is excited to work in a fast- paced international organisation across multiple time zones. Preferred candidates are those who are self-driven, work to high standards and collaborative effectively with a global virtual team.

Roles and Responsibilities

VCM Policy
  • Lead the global VCM working group (WG), ensuring IETA members are kept informed of key VCM activities. This includes holding a monthly meeting in two time zones, agenda setting, liaising with WG chairs and meeting administration.
  • Lead VCM consultations liaising with members to provide aggregated responses that represent member views.
  • Lead in authoring IETA VCM position papers that evolve the IETA house view on the evolution of the market and contribute to articles and communication materials.
  • Be knowledgeable on VCM news and developments (including ICVCM, VCMI, SBTI, Oxford, GHG Protocol; key players; market trends, large market activity; relevant market research; overlap of VCM w/ compliance systems or A6; national and sub-national policy related to VCM; Scope 3 initiatives, etc.)

ICROA
  • Support the work of ICROA, providing knowledge and expertise in the evolution of the Code of Best Practise and supporting the ICROA Director as required, e.g. leading special projects like country engagement, representing ICROA in person in your country/region.  
Events and Advocacy
  • Be an advocate for high environmental integrity and actionable market solutions to grow private sector voluntary climate action
  • Organise VCM events at IETA summits and COP and represent IETA at other conferences.
  • Support the Communications Director to organise and run events, write articles, respond to media enquiries and ensure visibility on social media platforms
Knowledge Management
  • Lead the knowledge sharing and education on VCM policy and guidance with IETA staff and members.  
  • Lead the development of the VCM Policy Tracker as a global tool for staff and, once established, roll out to IETA members. 
  • Ensure effective knowledge management of all VCM documents including policy papers, and WG materials.

Location
US east coast or London with flexibility to work virtually. All candidates must be eligible to work in the proposed location.

Reporting Lines
The role will report directly to the VCM Managing Director, IETA

Competencies and Skill Set
 
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in carbon markets, including voluntary carbon markets
  • Solid education and experience in market-based climate change policy and understanding of the global landscape on climate negotiations.
  • Experience working with corporates to develop and implement internal abatement and emissions compensation strategies is a plus
  • Experience managing people, in particular ‘leading from the back’
  • Excellent facilitation and interpersonal skills, developing initiatives, and driving to conclusion.  
  • Entrepreneurial approach, resilience, flexibility and ability to adapt to significant workloads, prioritising accordingly with minimal support
  • Excellent communication skills including experience at public speaking. Fluent in written and spoken English, with preference for an additional language (ideally French, Mandarin or Spanish)
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office, knowledge of social media and other communication tools a plus
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, collaborate and grow your professional skills.
